OSHA - ELECTRICAL UTILITIES

OSHA recently published the final ruling revising the standard for power generation, transmission and distribution (electric utilities and some large industrial workers) on April 11, 2014. The document is available in the Federal Register and becomes law July 10, 2014.

IN SUMMARY

Starting July 11, 2014 electrical utility workers and their contractors are required to wear flame resistant clothing for arc flash exposures.

As of April 1, 2015 electrical utility workers and their contractors will be required to wear arc rated FR clothing that matches the workplace hazard.

Per the standard, arc flash clothing for these workers must be paid for by the employer.

By January 1, 2015 companies are required to have an arc flash hazard assessment completed. This will determine the arc level their employees are required to wear on or before April 1, 2015.

FR CLOTHING IS DEFINED AS NON-MELTING, NON-IGNITABLE.
